This is the cabin in late Nov.,of '04 .Breaking in the old Dodge proper,3guy's ,gear and 3 Elk on the ride home that truck was packed! I'd never seen a "long track" sled before going out there, they were alot different than the 'ol 340 Jag I was accustomed too :
Re: Un-real early snow AND Waylon??

Brian, all you need is to rejet the sled, change gearing , and rework clutch's. Oh ya and probly more track depth. !! where is this place ?

Re: Un-real early snow AND Waylon??
should only have to change clutch spring, never tried rejetting a fuel injected 4 stroke before,,, gearing should be low enough, but a 1 1/2" lug isnt gonna get it,,,, had Dave not been there to help me swap the track, I would have had a nightmare doing it the first time. Better for me to just rent

Re: Un-real early snow AND Waylon??
I have been out west twice - Cooke City and Togwotee. I rented both times.
I would recommend renting at least the first time. There is enough to worry about already without trying to dial in a sled as well. Just get one that is already set up for you and have a blast!
Get the insurance if they offer it. In Cooke City (my first time out) they didn't offer insurance. The entire time I was riding in the back of my mind I was trying to figure out how to explain to my wife why I had to pay $10K for a wrecked pile of parts. Much more relaxing the second time out (with insurance) knowing that no matter what happened I would only be on the hook for $1000... No damage to the sleds in either case but the piece of mind was priceless!
I have a 50/50 chance of going on a trip to Stanley ID this Jan. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!!
I love the riding but man there is no air up at 9000'!!! This time around I am in much better shape - lost over 30lbs and ready to rock!!

You aren't kidding about the air, hard to explain to someone who hasn't tried to be active at altitude.. I've never ridden out there ,but went out 3 times Elk hunting. I lost some weight and worked out a bit before the first trip and thought I was in fairly decent shape for the mountains-wow was I wrong on that one!!! Best advice is do alot I mean,ALOT ,of stair climbing and start taking aspirin when your headed to altitude at least for a couple days till your body gets better adjusted to it..

Drink LOTS and LOTS of water. Most of altitude sickness is actually dehydration - people forget that the thin air is DRY as well. When you get stuck it is 30 seconds of digging/struggling with the sled, then 2 minutes of rest - repeat until free. We would usually ride 9am -> 4pm and be DONE for the day. Collapse into bed by 8pm and do it again the next day.
Cooke City is at 7700' and Togwotee Lodge is at 8600'. Both places you go UP to ride...
Best trips I have ever had!!!

The cabin is at 7500-8000', most of the hunting was done above the cabin, the highest was up on the saddle, that was at 10,200' . ugly climb,I didn't make it on my first try, walk 20yds stop and gasp for 2 min ..Made it on day two though ,the aspirin helps your lungs transfer oxygen a bit better by thinning the blood..Sngsht wrote:
